Pope St. Eugene I was elected on August 10, 654, while his predecessor Pope St, Martin I was alive in exile. Pope St. Martin sent a letter acknowledging Pope St. Eugene’s legitimacy. Even under the threat of being burned alive, Pope St. Eugene I refused to bend to Monothelitism. He died on June 2nd, 657.
