St. Basil the Great

St Basil the Great IconDuring the 4th century, St. Basil the Great was instrumental in fighting off the growing heretic beliefs that Christ was not divine. He was a large part in developing the Catholic doctrines that are still practiced today. He also helped to spread awareness and learning of the Nicene Creed to the masses. As soldier as well as a clergyman, he fought against evil influences in Constantinople and Byzantine East. These courageous efforts led to his stature of martyr when he was killed while protecting the Church.

St. Basil the Great has become the patron saint of hospital administrators because of his work with the sick and poor. He also known for his learning; great writings earned him the title of “Doctor of the Church.” He is often depicted as a frail, but stately, man holding a book. In colored pictures, he is wearing a red robe that symbolizes his martyrdom.
