St. Madeline Sophie Barat

St. Madeleine Sophie Barat is known for her incredible impact on Catholic education throughout the world. As the creator of the Society of the Sacred Heart, her legacy has spurred the growth of over 100 schools named in her honor.

As dedicated student and follower of the faith, she pursued an extensive education in Greek, Latin, history, mathematics and physics. Her education was encouraged by her brother Louis, who was also a seminarian in the Catholic Church. Her love of learning encouraged her understanding of theology, and she eventually believed that she had a calling in religious life. She took her vows at 21 and founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1800. The Heart of Christ is a symbol associated with St. Madeleine Sophie Barat.

Today, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat is remembered for her dedication in education individuals regardless of their socioeconomic status in life. Whether a student was wealthy or poor, she felt compelled to provide equal educational opportunities to all students. She was canonized in 1925. Her feast day is May 25th.
