According to the Encyclopedia of the Saints, “Saint Christopher is the patron saint of America, motor travelers and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers who appeared to St. Joan of Arc.
A martyr, Christopher, called Kester, died at Lycia, Asia Minor (modern Turkey). Tradition states that he was an ugly giant of a man who made a living carrying people across a river. One day a small boy asked for a ride, and Christopher put him on his shoulder and waded into the water. With each step, the child grew heavier, and Christopher struggled in fear of his life. The child then revealed that he was Christ. Christopher means “Christ-bearer.” His relics are in Rome and Paris. He is invoked against sudden death, accidents, plagues, and all mortal danger.”
His feast day is July 25th.
