Much of the story of St. Joshua is told in the Old Testament in the book of Deuteronomy and the book of Joshua. He is also mentioned in Exodus and Numbers. Joshua served as a spy for Moses as he prepared to lead the Israelites into the land of Canaan. When Moses died, Joshua assumed command of the tribes of Israel and led them into and through many brave battles. God appointed Joshua to lead his chosen people through tough times. Just as Joshua used his gifts to lead the Israelis, today we can also gain strength from his story of courage.
Joshua is reputed to have died at about 110 years old. Because of his service as a spy, Joshua is known as the patron saint of spies and intelligence officials. He is depicted frequently as a soldier.
