St. Charles was born into a deeply religious and prominent family. His mother was Margaret Medici, the sister of Pope Pius IV. His uncle also went on to become Pope. It is no surprise, then, that St. Charles also followed in the footsteps of his family and lived a spiritual and memorable life within the peace of the church. He is known as someone who worked tirelessly to spread the word of Christ and improve the function of the church. For example, he helped push through reforms that held clergy more accountable for their morality, forced them to be more educated about the church, and helped children receive more education. He faced fierce opposition but always managed to make others around him better.
On the night of November 3-4, he died at Milan. He is forever remembered as a reformist that believed in education and knowledge. It is for this reason that he is the patron saint of learning and the arts
