Patron saint of priests, St. John Vianney has a feast day on Aug. 4 also referred to as the Cure of Ars. Born in 1786 France, he instructed other children in catechism and prayer. He was ordained at age 29, was vicar at Ecully before assignment to Ars-sur-Formans in 1818.
Finding attendance at services lacking, John Vianney made a point of visiting parishioners, especially the ill and destitute performing penance and leading by example. He believed even the worst sinners could find God. Many of the worst of the worst converted due to his efforts.
John Vianney listened to confessions from people near and far for 16 hours a day. Renowned for charity and love, he cherished ministering to people, which brought about his designation as the living embodiment of what a priest should be. He died on Aug. 4, 1859. Pope Piux XI canonized him on May 31, 1925
