St Mary Mackillop is the only native Australian canonized saint. Born in Melbourne to Scottish immigrant parents, she knew financial hardship from her youth. Drawn to religious life, she was the foundress of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart. This order, also known as the Josephite sisters were focussed on the children of the poor. They staffed schools and orphanages among other charitable works.
