St. Tarcisius was a deacon, layman, or acolyte (sources vary) who carried the Eucharist to Christians in Roman prisons. He was martyred by a pagan mob on the Appian Way while on his mission. It is said that when the pagans searched the body after beating him to death, the Eucharist had miraculously disappeared. He is the Patron Saint of Altar Servers.
